Does Florida Have State Income Tax?
No. Here is what that actually means for a New York, New Jersey or California household thinking about a move: real 2025 rate tables, worked examples and the parts of the picture nobody puts in the headline.
Short answer: Florida has no state income tax on individuals and no estate or inheritance tax. Wages, business income, pensions, Social Security, capital gains and dividends are not taxed by the state. You still pay federal income tax. What Florida taxes instead is spending (7% sales tax in Miami-Dade and Broward) and property (roughly 0.8%–1% of value per year), and homeowners insurance runs higher than up north.
- 0%Florida state income tax rate. No brackets, no state return.
- $0Florida estate and inheritance tax.
- $49,518State + city income tax a NYC couple pays on $500K taxable income (2025 schedules). Florida: $0.
- 7%Combined sales tax in Miami-Dade and Broward (6% state + 1% county).
What Florida does not tax
I work with buyers coming down from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and California every week, and this is always the first question. The answer is written into the state constitution, not a budget that can change next year.
No personal income tax
Article VII, Section 5 of the Florida Constitution prohibits the state from taxing the income of natural persons beyond the (now repealed) federal credit, which in practice means a 0% rate. There is no state return to file, no state withholding on your paycheck, and no state tax on:
- Wages, bonuses and self-employment income
- Pensions, 401(k) and IRA withdrawals, and Social Security
- Capital gains, dividends and interest
- Rental income from Florida property
No estate tax, no inheritance tax
Florida's estate tax was tied to a federal credit that was repealed, so the state's estate tax has been $0 since 2005. There has never been a Florida inheritance tax. The federal estate tax still applies above the federal exemption, so this matters most for larger estates that would otherwise face a state-level bill in New York, New Jersey (which has an inheritance tax) or Massachusetts.
Where it goes wrong: the savings only exist if you actually become a Florida resident and stop being a resident of the state you left. New York in particular audits this aggressively. Section 5 below covers the 183-day rule.
What you keep: New York, NYC, New Jersey and California vs Florida
These are state and city income taxes only, computed from each state's published 2025 rate schedules for a married couple filing jointly, on the taxable income shown. Federal tax is the same wherever you live and is left out.
| Where you live | $150,000 | $300,000 | $500,000 | Top marginal rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New York State (outside NYC) | $7,918 | $16,860 | $30,363 | 10.9% |
| New York City (state + city) | $13,507 | $28,264 | $49,518 | 14.776% |
| New Jersey | $5,513 | $15,068 | $27,808 | 10.75% |
| California | $6,827 | $20,777 | $39,377 | 13.3% |
| Florida | $0 | $0 | $0 | 0% |
Two more states I see a lot of buyers from: Connecticut tops out at 6.99%, and Massachusetts charges a flat 5% plus a 4% surtax on taxable income above $1,083,150 (tax year 2025), so 9% at the top.
A useful way to read the table: a New York City couple at $300,000 keeps about $28,000 a year in Florida. Over ten years, before any investment return, that is the down payment on a second property. That is the math behind most of the Northeast moves I close.

What Florida does tax
Florida is not tax-free. It is income-tax-free. Here is the rest of the bill, with the numbers I use with clients.
Sales tax: 7% in Miami-Dade and Broward
The state rate is 6%, and both Miami-Dade and Broward add a 1% discretionary surtax, for 7% total. The surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of a single item of tangible personal property, so a car or a boat is 7% on the first $5,000 and 6% above that. Groceries and prescription drugs are exempt.
Property tax: about 0.8% to 1% of value
| County | Median home value | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|
| Miami-Dade County, FL | $463,000 | 0.81% |
| Broward County, FL | $414,600 | 0.96% |
| Westchester County, NY | $663,200 | 1.84% |
| Nassau County, NY | $684,700 | 1.72% |
| New York County (Manhattan), NY | $1,090,500 | 0.71% |
| New Jersey (state average) | — | 1.88% |
Two Florida rules make the property tax bill better than the rate suggests if the home is your primary residence:
- Homestead exemption. Up to $50,000 comes off the assessed value of your primary home before the rate is applied ($50,722 for 2025, since the second $25,000 tier is now inflation-adjusted). You apply once with the county property appraiser.
- Save Our Homes cap. Once homesteaded, your assessed value can rise at most 3% a year, or the CPI change if lower (2.9% for 2025), no matter what the market does. Long-time owners in Miami are often paying tax on a fraction of what their home is worth. Note the flip side: a new buyer pays on the full purchase price, so never estimate your tax from the seller's current bill.
Other taxes to know
- Documentary stamp tax on the deed when you buy (paid by the seller by custom in Miami-Dade) and on any mortgage note (paid by the buyer). Your closing statement will show these; ask me for a real estimate on a specific property.
- Corporate income tax exists (5.5%) for C corporations. It does not touch S corps, LLCs taxed as partnerships or sole proprietors, which is most of the business owners I work with.
The honest part
Homeowners insurance costs more here
The latest finalized industry data (NAIC, 2022, as published by the Insurance Information Institute) puts the average Florida homeowners premium at $2,677 a year, the highest in the country, against $1,628 in New York and a $1,569 national average. Current quotes are higher than that 2022 figure; private estimates for 2025–2026 range widely depending on the home's age, roof, distance from the water and whether it is a condo (where the building's master policy carries most of the risk) or a single-family house. I tell every buyer to get an insurance quote on a specific property before making an offer, and I can connect you with the brokers I use.
You have to actually leave
The tax savings depend on your old state agreeing you are gone. New York's statutory residency test is the strictest one I deal with: if you keep a permanent place of abode in New York and spend more than 183 days there in a year (any part of a day counts), New York taxes you as a full resident no matter where you are domiciled. New Jersey, California, Connecticut and Massachusetts each run their own domicile tests. Practical moves that hold up: Florida driver's license and voter registration, a Florida homestead exemption on the new home, moving your doctors, accountant and "important documents," and keeping a day count. A CPA who handles multi-state moves is worth every dollar in year one.
Not tax advice. I am a real estate broker, not a CPA or attorney. Every figure on this page is taken from the state tax agencies' published 2025 rate schedules and the sources listed at the bottom, but your own return depends on deductions, credits, timing and residency facts I cannot see. Run your numbers with a professional before you act on them.
Homes relocating buyers are looking at right now
Live listings between $800,000 and $3,000,000 in the three areas most of my Northeast clients end up: Sunny Isles Beach and Aventura in Miami-Dade, and Fort Lauderdale in Broward. Pulled from the MLS as you load this page.

Frequently asked questions
Does Florida have state income tax?
No. Florida does not tax individual income. The state constitution (Article VII, Section 5) prohibits it, so there is no rate, no brackets and no state return. Federal income tax still applies.
What is the Florida income tax rate?
0% for individuals. Florida does charge a 5.5% corporate income tax on C corporations, which does not apply to most small businesses structured as S corps or LLCs.
Do I have to file a Florida income tax return?
No. There is no Florida individual income tax return. You will still file a federal return, and a part-year or nonresident return in the state you left for the year you move.
Does Florida tax Social Security, pensions or 401(k) withdrawals?
No. Because Florida has no individual income tax, retirement income of every kind is untaxed at the state level. That is a big part of why retirees from New York and New Jersey, where pensions above certain thresholds are taxed, end up here.
Does Florida have an estate tax or inheritance tax?
No to both. Florida's estate tax has been $0 since 2005 and there has never been an inheritance tax. The federal estate tax still applies above the federal exemption.
How long do I have to live in Florida to be a resident for tax purposes?
Florida itself does not tax income, so it has no day-count rule to satisfy. The test that matters is your old state's. New York treats you as a resident if you keep a home there and spend more than 183 days in the state, so most movers keep their New York days well under that and document the move (license, voter registration, homestead exemption). Confirm your situation with a CPA.
What does Florida tax instead?
Sales tax (6% state plus a 1% county surtax in Miami-Dade and Broward, 7% total), property tax (about 0.81% of value in Miami-Dade and 0.96% in Broward per the Tax Foundation's 2024 data), and homeowners insurance that runs higher than in the Northeast.
How much does a New York City family save by moving to Florida?
Using the 2025 New York State and New York City rate schedules for a married couple filing jointly, state plus city income tax is about $13,507 on $150,000 of taxable income, $28,264 on $300,000 and $49,518 on $500,000. In Florida the state figure is $0.
What is the sales tax in Miami?
7%: the 6% state rate plus a 1% Miami-Dade County surtax. Broward County (Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood) is also 7%. The county 1% applies only to the first $5,000 of a single item.
