Best Neighborhoods in Miami for Families
Miami-Dade County only. Eleven neighborhoods ranked for families, with the county's A-rated school district as the constant, plus real prices, named parks, hospitals and private tuition I can source directly from the schools.
Short answer: for Miami-Dade families I lead with Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Coral Gables, Key Biscayne and Aventura, all zoned into the county's A-rated district (2024-25). Doral, Miami Shores, Kendall, Cutler Bay and Miami Springs round out the list for families who want more space, water access or a lower price. This page does not cover Broward or Palm Beach County suburbs, which I cover on my South Florida families guide.
- AFLDOE district grade for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, 2024-25.
- 11Miami-Dade neighborhoods ranked below for families.
- $449,702Most affordable full-service pick, Aventura (Redfin, Aug. 2026).
- $26,400Belen Jesuit 2026-27 base tuition, grades 6-12, the most affordable sourced private option.
How I ranked these
Every neighborhood below sits inside Miami-Dade County Public Schools, graded A by the Florida Department of Education for 2024-25, the number I trust without qualification. Individual school names, GreatSchools ratings and Niche rankings come from private aggregators, not the state, so I label them "schools families ask me about." Parks are named only where a county or city page confirms them, and private-school tuition is quoted only for schools whose own site I pulled directly. I left out crime data; I could not confirm it from an official source I would put my name on.
Ranked: 11 Miami-Dade neighborhoods for families
- Top pick
Pinecrest
Pinecrest Elementary ranks 68th of 2,258 Florida elementary schools on the ranking sites in the sources below, Palmetto Middle carries an A-minus, and Miami Palmetto Senior High ranks 235th of 838 Florida high schools per Niche, schools families ask me about, in Miami-Dade's A-rated district. Highest household income on this page, $206,417, population 18,635. Median sale price $2,098,949 (Redfin, July 2026). Pinecrest Gardens, a 14-acre botanical park on the old Parrot Jungle site with a "Splash 'N Play" water playground, is the neighborhood's signature family spot; it is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Village feel
Palmetto Bay
Zoned for Howard Drive, Perrine and Coral Reef elementaries and Miami Palmetto Senior High, which Niche ranks 64th among Florida public high schools on a narrower list than the 235th-of-838 all-schools ranking above, plus Ada Merritt Elementary's 2024 Blue Ribbon award, schools families ask me about, district A. Population 24,886, median household income $142,447. Median sale price $1,174,361 (Redfin, June 2026). Coral Reef Park, transferred from the county to the Village of Palmetto Bay in December 2003, is the local park most families use.
- Historic, top schools
Coral Gables
Coconut Grove Elementary is a 10/10 GreatSchools pick, Carver Middle ranks 15th of 1,196 Florida middle schools on the ranking sites in the sources below, and both Coral Gables Senior High and Miami Palmetto Senior High carry Niche A grades, district A. Population 49,578, median household income $134,216. Median sale price $1.7 million at $859 per square foot (Redfin, three months ending June 2026). "The City Beautiful" runs its own historic-preservation board, separate from the county's, since 1973.
- Island
Key Biscayne
Key Biscayne K-8 Center posts a 4-star SchoolDigger rating, 87% and 93% third-grade ELA and math proficiency, and ranks 211th of Florida elementary schools; it feeds Coral Gables Senior High, district A. Population 14,815, median household income $181,505, second only to Pinecrest on this page. Median sale price $1,524,237 (Redfin, July 2026). Reachable only by the Rickenbacker Causeway, a 3.6-mile span completed in 1947, the island's sole road in and out.
- Historic and leafy
Coconut Grove
Coconut Grove Elementary (547 students, PK-5) posts 83% math and 85% reading proficiency, "performing above average," with a Gifted & Talented program, district A. It is part of the City of Miami, not its own Census entity, so no separate household-income figure exists. The for-sale market skews ultra-luxury, single-family: around $2.85 million overall, with Southwest Grove near $2.2 million and Northeast Grove near $2.0 million (Redfin, three-month trailing, via search cache, treat as approximate). Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart sits on Main Highway for families who want a private option in the neighborhood.
- Condo family living
Aventura
Aventura City of Excellence, a K-8 charter, posted 98% Algebra 1 proficiency, and Don Soffer Aventura Charter High an 89.7% four-year grad rate in the top 10 to 15% of Florida high schools, district A. Population 39,880, median household income $89,274. Median sale price $449,702 (Redfin, Aug. 2026), the most affordable full-service option on this page. Founders Park, 12 acres split between a playground/splash-pad north side and a bayside south section with a bay walk and pickleball courts, anchors family life here.
- Leafy, high income
Miami Shores
Miami Shores Elementary (593 students, PK-5) carries a 6/10 GreatSchools rating and a B-plus from Niche, with 53% and 60% math and reading proficiency, district A. Population 11,669, median household income $144,050, the highest of the neighborhoods newly priced for this guide; median home value $864,400 and median gross rent $2,657 (Census QuickFacts; I could not confirm a Miami Shores-specific Redfin market figure this pass). The Village's own Aquatic Center, with a 2021 "Wild Waters" feature, and the C. Lawton McCall Community Center serve the neighborhood.
- Master-planned, growing
Doral
Doral Academy, a K-5 charter, posted 87% fifth-grade science proficiency against a 55 to 56% district/state average; Doral Academy of Technology was named Florida's No. 1 public middle school by U.S. News, and Doral Academy Charter High ranks 37th of 792 Florida high schools on the ranking sites in the sources below, district A. Population 81,634, median household income $94,164. Median sale price $617,092 (Redfin, Aug. 2026). The city runs 11 parks, including the 78-acre Doral Central Park, whose 50-meter Olympic pool opened summer 2025.
- Established, budget option
Kendall
Palmetto Elementary, Somerset Academy Bay Elementary and William H. Lehman Elementary all carry 10/10 GreatSchools ratings, with Kendale Elementary at 9/10 and the School for Advanced Studies-Kendall Campus also at 10/10, district A. Population 80,241 (2020 Census), median household income $87,325, median home value $567,900, average commute to work 30.0 minutes (Census). Unincorporated Miami-Dade: no city hall of its own, just long-established, tree-lined subdivisions.
- Longer commute, lower price
Cutler Bay
Cutler Bay Senior High carries a Niche A and Cambridge International curriculum with AP courses and 10 sports programs, though GreatSchools rates it 6/10 (72%/82% math/reading proficiency), district A. Population 44,750, median household income $89,244, median home value $472,700, the longest average commute to work of any neighborhood on this page at 38.2 minutes (Census). The trade-off here is space and price against drive time.
- Small town, mixed schools
Miami Springs
Miami Springs Elementary carries a 9/10 GreatSchools rating, but Miami Springs Senior High sits at 2/10, a wide enough gap that I flag it before recommending the high school, district A. Population 13,611, median household income $87,099, median home value $560,800, average commute 28.2 minutes (Census). A small, walkable historic aviation town; ask me about school options for a specific address before you commit.
Private school tuition, where I can source it
Five schools Miami-Dade families ask me about publish their own tuition directly. Ransom Everglades in Coconut Grove charges $57,300 for 2026-27 across grades 6 through 12, lunch included. Gulliver Preparatory, with campuses across Miami-Dade, tiers 2026-27 tuition at $36,400 for PK through senior kindergarten, $40,200 for grades 1 through 4, and $56,100 for grades 5 through 12. Palmer Trinity School in Palmetto Bay (grades 6-12) runs $52,000 to $54,000 for 2026-27 depending on payment plan, plus a $3,000 deposit; it accepts no state or federal funding. Belen Jesuit Preparatory School in Miami, a boys' school for grades 6 through 12, charges a $26,400 base tuition, lunch included, the most affordable option I can source. Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, a girls' school in Coconut Grove, tiers from $36,790 for Montessori through $51,840 for grades 7 through 12. Other private schools here publish tuition too; ask me and I will pull the current number directly from the school rather than repeat one I have not verified myself.
Hospitals
Baptist Health South Florida runs 11 hospitals and 100-plus outpatient sites across Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe counties, including Baptist Hospital of Miami and South Miami Hospital near Kendall, Doctors Hospital in Coral Gables, and Homestead Hospital. Nicklaus Children's Hospital, whose main campus sits in the South Miami and Kendall area, partners with Baptist Health for pediatric emergency care: the 24-hour pediatric ERs at Baptist Hospital and Homestead Hospital are staffed by Nicklaus Children's physicians, and admitted pediatric patients transfer to the Nicklaus campus.
